The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth’s aim is to bring together Toronto’s independent creative communities, with a focus on DIY, small press, and independent print and publishing. Through curated events, The Commonwealth will help local creatives join forces to promote the DIY and small press scene as a whole.

The Commonwealth’s first event will take place on Saturday, June 1st from 8pm-12am at 163 Sterling Rd. The event will coincide with the launch of Go Home Magazine’s third issue, and will include 25+ local independent vendors, from small press publishers to DIY individuals, who will be tabling their work. You’ll find small run books, zines, t-shirts, buttons, prints, photographs.

There will be cheap beer and tunes all night. Oh, and a bonfire. Make sure to come out and support The Commonwealth. After all, we’re all in this together.

Full vendor’s will be posted soon but Permanent Sleep is proud to be part of the first Common Wealth event and will be the first place to pick up some new zines from us and mark the return of Gemini. Come out and support DIY print culture, pick up some zines, party and enjoy the bon fire.

The Ruins of a Rube by Joseph Sulier and Emma Kohlmann

I came back from Costa Rica to find this gem waiting for me on the kitchen table beneath a pile of junk mail and dirty dishes. The Ruins of a Rube is a collaboration between Joseph Sulier and Emma Kohlmann, featuring 11 poems and corresponding illustrations.

Sulier’s prose and Kohlmann’s watercolors compliment each other nicely, striking a balance between the abstract and concrete. They succeed in creating a world and bringing us in, each page drawing the viewer further along as the pensive trickle gives way to an atmosphere of shifting boundaries and distorted perspectives. It’s a not-so-unfamiliar place, decisions second-guessed as we recall our deepest passions and desires that were so ruefully suppressed.

Joseph Sulier recently performed a reading of this latest collection at Fucked Up’s Long Winter in Toronto. The Ruins of a Rube is pressed by Permanent Sleep out of an edition of 100, and is still available for purchase through the webstore. Grab a copy for yourself before they’re all gone!

The Don’t Sweat It group show, curated by Luke Pelletier and held at Galerie F in Chicago, opens tomorrow! If you can, go party! There’re SO many rad artists in this thing!

A bunch of those artists (and one plucky, braindead scribbler with a heart of tinfoil: me) made promo videos for the show. Here’s mine! It was made by Sammy J. Scorpion (filming/editing) and Scru Bar (interviewer).

Those two did an AMAZING job, especially with someone as camera shy as me, and I wanna thank ‘em for turning out such an awesome, hilarious video! Be sure to check out their band, NEW SWEARS, especially if you’re into BLACK LIPS, SMITH WESTERNS, DAVILA 666 and FIDLAR. Those guys are NUTS. Check out their music videos, too. Total destruction.

Anyway, the video features a timelapse of me doing that sharpie mural in their house, and then an interview with me.

I received a copy of Johanna Torel l’s latest book Hemifrån in the mail a couple days back. I tried to write a thoughtful review, but quickly realized I couldn’t describe it half as well as she did. Here’s what Johanna had to say about the book:

“Hemifrån means Away From Home. The name fits the photos well—I started moving around young and took my first step towards an unsettled life when I moved to London where I got to know some people who were just like me. Well, I was young and naive and hungry for adventures, and these people had been on the road way longer.
But they all felt unadjusted just like me, they climbed rooftops in Hackney at 3 am, painted at 4 and told you stories at 6. They wanted to use you in their stories and I wanted to be a part of theirs.
I learned a lot from that time and because of it I am now built out of nostalgia. I have always felt like I don’t know where home is, but it is in the last year I’ve realized that my home is in pieces of all the people that I’ve met along the way.
And when you buy your first bed and discover that you relate to the floor better, then you know you’ve had adventures, and those adventures and that nostalgia will keep you up at night, only with a feeling that the people you’ve met along the way are doing and feeling the same thing and that you will without a doubt see most of them again.
So here is my first photo book, and even if you’re not among the ones in it, you’re still part of the feeling that I have every time I press that button.
Thank you for being that feeling and for letting me use you in my story.”

Designed by Ross Proulx, the book features a sticker design by Jon D of Well Fed, a silkscreened woodcut by Simon Erl the international heartthrob and an introduction written by yours truly. 48 pages, 7×7, full color, and perfect bound, published by Permanent Sleep out of an edition of 100.
